Big Red makes significant growth during pandemic

Big Red Construction has achieved a 400% turnover since 2020, despite the challenges posed by Covid-19. We now boast a forward order book of around £20 million in 2022 and confirmed revenue of over £5 million for 2021.

Big Red, which will celebrate five years of trading in March 20220, started as a basic bar fit-out business under Group Managing Director Mike Lomas, who was only 25 at the time. Through Mike’s drive and ambition, the organisation has been able to secure several high-profile clients across various sectors including Food, Pharmaceutical, Health and Petrochemical.

As part of the now 50-strong workforce, Big Red’s rapid success has required a number of strategic senior appointments.

Mike Lomas, Group Managing Director, is responsible for the group performance. Having worked in senior leadership roles for some of the world’s most well-known brands like Reckitt Benckiser and L’Oreal, Mike has been able to put his breadth of knowledge and experience into shaping Big Red into a successful construction firm.

Lucy Pennington-North is the Group Finance Director; she joined the company in 2018 after previously working at ISG Construction. Bringing a wealth of expertise to the group, Lucy has developed and grown the finance department in line with the wider business over the past three years.

Mike Pickles, Group Pre-Construction Director with a background in the commercial and contractual aspects of developments, has a proven track record of delivering and performing on difficult assignments.

Ian Nuttall has recently been appointed as Group Commercial Director. With over 25 years of experience in the construction industry, Ian is responsible for the commercial and procurement function of the business. Ian has worked within a wide range of sectors and projects.

Greg Wood, Group Operations Director, is the newest appointment in the directorate. Following on from a successful career in sport, Greg changed trajectory and moved into manufacturing where he worked his way up to eventually finding himself at Reckitt Benckiser as an Operations Manager and Site Lead. Most recently, Greg worked for Greencore Food as the Operations Controller.

With a strong senior leadership team now in place, Big Red is primed to take on bigger and more ambitious projects throughout 2022 and beyond. While at the helm of a still-young and agile firm, the team has its sights set on a multidisciplinary approach to the construction sector, with projects in Food, Pharma and Health and Building Management Services as well as commercial and residential construction contracts. It has also branched out into sports sponsorship, and is the proud owner of Rugby League team Midlands Hurricanes, as well as partner to home team Huddersfield Giants.

Big Red’s ethos is to ‘be big and be different’, and with a dynamic team driving the organisation forward, it looks set to achieve great things in the years to come.
