In 2018 Big Red were delighted to work with their friends at SKA Developments to deliver 54 luxury student apartments on Dundas Street in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Construction in Huddersfield is on the up and the busy student population is a big part of that, over 24,000 students attend the University of Huddersfield annually. This project enabled restoring an old textile mill to form luxury student accommodation for the ever-growing student population of the area.
Huddersfield was once centre of the global textile industry and these mills would support heavy machinery and fabrics delivering to many countries across the world.
Dundas is a project which nods to the history of the building while modernising certain aspects with the inclusion of an additional floor and joining of the two mill wings to open up the entire floor space for a fantastic scheme for accommodation.
Big Red were delighted to be appointed as principle contractor on this scheme to deliver the 54 apartments. The project entailed a full demolition (stripping back to original) and full refurbishment. The project also included adding an additional floor featured into the original building. This is seen in grey on the attached photos.
